Scott and Philomena have been together since the summer of 2023. We began basic obedience training as soon as it was safe to do so at Life is Dog (LiD), first doing a few private sessions. Once she got more of her puppy shots, she started to socialize with other dogs at puppy play classes and also group training. She also started to go out into the world at local stores that allowed well-mannered dogs to experience even more sights, sounds, and smells. None of the stores had carpeting however because Scott often had to do some cleanup 💩. Thankfully, the employees didn't mind because Scott brought bags and paper towels and Philomena was a particularly adorable puppy.
As Philomena grew, more and more people told Scott to investigate becoming a therapy team. Life is Dog offered their first therapy dog prep program in the fall of 2025 and Scott took that as "the sign". After completing course, Scott had a few more requirements including several hours of online training before they could continue on to become a volunteer for Pet Partners (PP). During this time, Philomena continued to go into accepting public areas to keep expanding her experiences and confidence. In February 2026, we passed our team evaluation which was the last hurdle and were a registered therapy animal team by mid-February.
Scott also chose to be affiliated with the PP Community Partner Tufts Paws for People (TP4P). Being part of a community group is not a requirement to be a therapy team or do any facilitiy visits but, being part of one gives local, personal access to teams who have been doing therapy animal work for decades. TP4P had additional requirements before we could go out into the world like a mentoring program; where another handler from the group went with us to our first handful of visits to answer any questions and ensure we were following the guidelines of PP.
We did our very first visit on March 2, 2026. Two weeks later we were cleared of our mentorship requirement with Tufts Paws for People (TP4P) and could venture out on our own. A little over a month later, we had logged ten visits and were eligible to apply for the American Kennel Club (AKC) Title Therapy Dog Novice (THDN).
We have been to colleges and universities, public and private schools, workplaces, corporate conferences, nursing and skilled care facilities, and even Polar Park. We look forward to finding new opportunities and returning to places we have already been!
